The Step-by-Step SEO & GEO Ecosystem Guide: Get Found on Google and Recommended by AI

An 8-step plan to build an SEO and GEO ecosystem that gets your business found on Google and recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity — backed by data from Google, OpenAI, Pew Research, Ahrefs and Princeton.

A website at the centre of a connected SEO and GEO ecosystem: search bar, AI answer, growth chart, map pin and five-star reviews

Key takeaways

  • SEO gets you found on Google; GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) gets you quoted and recommended inside AI answers. You need both, and they share the same foundations.
  • AI summaries are reducing clicks: Pew Research found people clicked a result on 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without one.
  • Answer-first content with statistics, quotations and cited sources was shown by Princeton researchers to lift visibility in AI answers by up to 41%.
  • AI engines recommend businesses they can identify: consistent business details, schema markup, reviews and third-party mentions matter as much as keywords.
  • Visitors from AI search convert at 4.4 times the rate of traditional organic visitors, so being recommended is worth more than ever.

What is an SEO and GEO ecosystem?

An SEO and GEO ecosystem is a connected set of website, content and reputation signals that helps search engines rank you and AI assistants recommend you. SEO wins positions on Google and Bing; GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) wins mentions inside answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.

You'll also hear AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation). AEO and GEO describe the same goal: being the source an AI tool trusts enough to quote. In practice they sit on top of SEO, not instead of it — AI tools still read the open web, and they lean heavily on pages that are fast, well structured and widely trusted.

Think of it as an ecosystem because every part feeds the others. A fast website gets crawled more, clear content gets quoted more, reviews and mentions build trust, and measurement tells you what to improve next. This guide walks through each part in the order we build them for clients on our SEO & AEO service.

Why search visibility is changing in 2026

People still search more than ever, but more of their questions are now answered by AI before they click. Google handles over 5 trillion searches a year, AI Overviews reach 2 billion people a month and ChatGPT has more than 800 million weekly users.

Google says it sees more than 5 trillion searches a year1. On Alphabet's Q2 2025 earnings call, Sundar Pichai said AI Overviews had 2 billion monthly users and AI Mode over 100 million2, and in October 2025 OpenAI said more than 800 million people use ChatGPT every week3.

The catch is clicks. Pew Research tracked the real browsing of 900 US adults and found that when Google showed an AI summary, people clicked a result on just 8% of visits, compared with 15% when there was no summary — and only 1% clicked a link inside the summary itself4.

AI summaries are taking clicks from page one

Ranking first on Google is worth less on informational searches than it used to be. Ahrefs found that an AI Overview cut the click-through rate of the top result by 58% in December 2025, up from 34.5% a year earlier.

Ahrefs compared 300,000 keywords with and without AI Overviews using Google Search Console data5. Every position on page one lost clicks, from −58% at #1 to −19.4% at #10. AI Overviews mostly appear on informational questions; commercial and local searches such as "affordable websites in Bristol" are still dominated by classic results and the map pack7.

That's why the rest of this guide does two jobs at once: keep winning classic rankings for the searches that bring buyers, and become the source AI tools cite for the questions people ask before they buy.

Step 1

Fix your technical foundations

Search engines and AI crawlers can only recommend pages they can load, read and trust. Start with a fast, mobile-first, HTTPS website, an XML sitemap, a robots.txt that welcomes AI crawlers and Core Web Vitals in the green.

Speed is a ranking signal and a sales signal. Deloitte's study of 37 brands found a 0.1-second faster mobile site lifted retail conversions by 8.4% and travel conversions by 10.1%10. Our plain-English guide to Core Web Vitals explains the targets: LCP under 2.5 seconds and CLS under 0.1.

Then check access. Your robots.txt should allow Googlebot and Bingbot plus AI crawlers such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot, and your sitemap should be submitted in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools — Bing's index also feeds Microsoft Copilot.

  • HTTPS on every page, with no mixed-content warnings
  • Mobile-first layout that passes Core Web Vitals
  • XML sitemap listing every page you want found
  • robots.txt that allows search and AI crawlers
  • Important content in the HTML, not hidden behind clicks or scripts

Step 2

Define your business as an entity

AI models recommend businesses they can identify with confidence. Use the same business name, phone number, address and one-sentence description everywhere, and confirm them with Organization or LocalBusiness schema that links to your social profiles.

An entity is a "thing" a search engine understands — your business, with its services, location and reputation attached. When your details match on your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, directories and social profiles, engines can join the dots and trust what they find.

Add structured data (schema.org JSON-LD) that names your business, logo, phone, opening hours, area served and sameAs links to your profiles. Then complete your Google Business Profile — our guide to getting local leads from a Google Business Profile covers the essentials.

  • One consistent name, phone number and address (NAP) everywhere
  • Organization or LocalBusiness schema with sameAs links
  • A clear About page that says who you are, what you do and where
  • Verified Google Business Profile and Bing Places listings
Step 3

Research the questions, not just the keywords

People type short keywords into Google but ask AI assistants full questions. List the keywords that bring buyers and the conversational questions customers ask, then give each one a single page that answers it best.

Ahrefs estimates that 96.55% of pages get no traffic from Google, and the number-one reason is that nobody is searching for the topic8. Start with demand: Google Search Console queries, Semrush or Ahrefs keyword data, "People also ask" boxes, and the questions customers ask you on the phone.

Ahrefs also found that 99.2% of keywords that trigger AI Overviews are informational6. So map commercial keywords to service, industry and location pages — for example affordable websites for plumbers — and informational questions to guides and FAQs.

  • Commercial: "web designer near me", "affordable websites in Bath" → service and location pages
  • Comparison: "website subscription vs one-off build" → comparison article
  • Informational: "what is GEO?" → guide or FAQ answer
Step 4

Write answer-first content AI can quote

Open every page and section with a direct 40–60 word answer, then back it up with statistics, quotations and named sources. Princeton researchers found these additions raised visibility in AI-generated answers by up to 41%.

The study that coined the term GEO tested nine ways of rewriting web pages across 10,000 queries9. Adding quotations from credible sources lifted visibility by about 41%, adding statistics by 31% and citing sources by 27%. Keyword stuffing — the old SEO trick — made pages less visible.

Best of all for small businesses: the gains were biggest for sites that ranked lower on Google. Citing sources raised visibility for the 5th-ranked site by 115.1%, while the top-ranked site lost ground9. Clear, well-evidenced content can beat a bigger brand inside an AI answer.

  • Use the question as the heading, and answer it in the first sentence
  • Keep paragraphs short; use lists and tables for steps and comparisons
  • Add real numbers, named sources and quotes from people who know
  • Show the date and update key pages at least once a year

Step 6

Win local search and reviews

For local businesses, the Google Business Profile, reviews and town-level location pages decide who gets recommended. BrightLocal found 71% of consumers always or regularly read reviews when choosing a local business.

The same BrightLocal survey found 44% of consumers are unlikely to use a business that doesn't respond to reviews12. Ask every happy customer for a review, reply to all of them, and keep your profile's services, photos and hours up to date.

Then give every area you serve its own useful page — with local FAQs, a map and the services you offer there — like our page on affordable websites in Weston-super-Mare. AI assistants answering "who builds websites near me?" look for exactly these local signals.

Step 7

Earn mentions where AI looks

AI answers lean heavily on trusted third-party sources, not just your own website. Pew Research and Ahrefs both found community and reference sites such as Wikipedia, Reddit, YouTube and Quora among the most cited, so build genuine mentions beyond your site.

Pew found Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit were among the sources cited most often in Google's AI summaries4, and Ahrefs' analysis of 55.8 million AI Overviews found Wikipedia, Reddit and Quora showing up most7. AI tools look for consensus: the more reputable places describe you the same way, the more confidently they recommend you.

For a small business that means accurate directory and review-site listings, helpful answers in relevant forums and groups, short how-to videos, local press, supplier and partner pages, and client case studies that link back to you.

  • Industry and local directories with matching business details
  • Review platforms beyond Google (Trustpilot, Facebook, trade sites)
  • Helpful, non-promotional answers in forums and community groups
  • Short YouTube videos answering your customers' top questions
Step 8

Measure, track AI visibility and improve monthly

Track rankings and clicks in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, AI referrals such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai in Google Analytics, and test your most important questions in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity every month.

AI visitors are worth the effort. Semrush found the average visitor from AI search converted at 4.4 times the rate of a traditional organic visitor, and projects AI search could send more visitors than traditional search by 202811.

Keep a simple monthly log: your top 10 keywords, AI referral sessions, and whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity mention you for your top 5 questions. Start today with a free website audit to benchmark your speed and SEO scores.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?

Quick answerSEO helps your pages rank in search results, while AEO and GEO help AI tools quote and recommend you inside their answers.

AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) mean almost the same thing, and both build on SEO foundations such as speed, structure and trust.

Does SEO still matter if people use ChatGPT?

Quick answerYes. Google still handles more than 5 trillion searches a year, and AI assistants read the same open web that search engines index.

Strong SEO makes your pages easier for AI tools to find, trust and cite.

How long does it take to see results from SEO and GEO?

Quick answerMost businesses see early movement within 3 to 6 months, with stronger results after 6 to 12 months of consistent work.

Technical fixes and Google Business Profile improvements can show results within weeks, while authority and AI mentions build over time.

Do I need schema markup to appear in AI answers?

Quick answerSchema isn't required, but it helps.

Structured data tells search engines and AI tools exactly who you are, what you offer and where, which reduces guesswork and makes your details easier to reuse accurately.

Should I block AI crawlers like GPTBot?

Quick answerNot if you want to be recommended by AI.

Blocking AI crawlers stops those tools from reading your pages, so they can't cite or recommend you. Most small businesses benefit from allowing them.

What is llms.txt and do I need one?

Quick answerllms.txt is an optional, proposed file that gives AI tools a plain-text summary of your most important pages.

It's quick to add and does no harm, but treat it as a bonus — the eight steps in this guide matter far more.

How much does SEO and GEO cost for a UK small business?

Quick answerWith Thomas Designs, website, SEO/AEO and branding plans start from £99 a month with no upfront build cost.

Higher plans add local keyword research, location pages, content and backlink outreach.
